World’s First Psychedelic Research Institute Opens in Australia

August 2021 saw the inauguration of the Psychae Institute in Melbourne, Australia. This is reportedly the world’s first research facility dedicated to develop psychedelic-based therapies for mental health issues and disorders.

Scientists and researchers from around the world will contribute to this institute. Some global universities which are a part of this research institute include the University of Zurich, the University of Toronto, King’s College London and the Federal University of the Rio Grande. Even Australian institutes will be involved like the University of Melbourne, NICM Health Research Institute and the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health.

Objectives of the Institute

· The institute will work towards the encouragement of more preclinical and clinical studies of psychedelics like MDMA, psilocybin and ayahuasca.

· Another aim is to develop strategies for introducing psychedelics effectively into therapy-based treatments of mental disorders.

· An important objective of the institute is to research and develop psychedelic medicines that can be controlled and prescribed to the patients.


What’s Ahead?

The Psychae Institute will start work from this year itself. Clinical studies might commence from the year 2022.

Among its primary investors is a North American biotechnology company. It has so far invested $29.6 million in the institute.
