This Hulu Series Aims to Break the Taboo on Psychedelics

Creator David E. Kelley released a miniseries called Nine Perfect Strangers on Hulu. The plot is simple – afflicted people visit a luxurious wellness retreat to get better. But they are not aware that their treatment involves the use of psychoactive substances.

About the Show

Based on a novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, the show’s cast includes A-list actors like Nicole Kidman, Luke Evans, Melissa McCarthy and Samara Weaving. The story revolves around a wellness retreat and its host Marsha (Nicole Kidman). Somewhere in the middle of the story, the guests realize Marsh has been drugging them with psychedelics without their knowledge. They are upset, but continue with the treatment.

The Larger Message

Jonathan Levine, the show’s director, believes that Nine Perfect Strangers will help psychedelic-based therapies reach more candidates. Currently illegal in the US, Levine thinks this show can break the taboo and concerns regarding the therapeutic use of psychoactive substances.
