Psychedelics: The Medicine of the Future?

“Psychedelics” are a term used to describe a variety of drugs that alter consciousness. These drugs are known as “psychedelic” because they can induce mystical states, which is the Greek word for “soul.” Psychedelics are growing in popularity and many people believe they have great medical potential. People who use psychedelics report having greater insights into themselves and their world, feel less judgmental and anxious, and can connect with outsiders better on these substances. However, there is also concern about their effects on mental health. What Are Psychedelics? Psychedelics are substances that alter the user’s consciousness or stimulate perception. They fall under a larger category called “discovered psychedelics” because they were first discovered well after classical antiquity in the mid-20th century. These discovered psychedelic drugs include LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), psilocybin (or magic mushrooms), mescaline (from cacti), DMT (dimethyltryptamine), 4-AcO-DMT, ibogaine, dimethoxyphenethylamine, vinpocetine, salvia divinorum, and ayahuasca among many others.
