Ketamine is a member of the class of drugs called dissociative anesthetics. It goes by some other names as well including Ketalar, Ketaset, and Ketanest. Some other drugs that belong to this category are hallucinogen, dextromethorphan (DXM), phencyclidine (PCP), and nitrous oxide. Taking ketamine can make you feel detached from your surroundings and sensations as if you are floating outside your body.
Uses of Ketamine
Used in veterinary medicine
Is capable of inducing and maintaining general anesthesia. It is either given through an IV line or injected into a muscle.
It is also used to control seizures in patients who have status epilepticus (SE). It is a type of epilepsy that might result in brain damage or death. However, it is only used when other options have failed to work.
In lower doses, it can work as an analgesic and relieve pain.
Effects of Ketamine
Ketamine can have some adverse effects as well, including:
Hallucinations, delirium, and confusion
Drowsiness
Dissociation from identity or body
Changes in the perception of sound and colour
Difficulty learning or thinking
Nausea
Agitation
Changes in eyesight and dilated pupils
Not able to control eye movements
Numbness
Slurred speech
Slow heartbeat
Involuntary muscle stiffness and movement
